Broken Taiyaki
A story about Brokeness, Healing, Love,
and Fish-shaped Cakes
A couple years ago I came up with a legend about Taiyaki and how if you break one open, it is said to renew a broken relationship. I always thought Taiyaki represented people so well: that the experiences we go through may make us all become ugly at times, but that we must remain sweet. And so I came up with this story, told through a few Haikus, to represent the legend and life itself.
Life is wonderful
Full of hopes, dreams, and purpose
To live is to be
Life is difficult
Imperfect, hard, and heavy
Easy to give up
Life is beautiful
Bright, warm, and admirable
Hard to not long for
Life is worth keeping
To love, to try, and fight for
Life is worth living
We’re like fish-shaped cakes
Filled with hope, shaped by heartache
To be even more
And when we’re broken,
We must always remember
To love and be sweet
2 Chronicles 15:7
But as for you, be strong and do not give up, for your work will be rewarded.
John 13:34
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another.
